The Dwelling CLT
a curatorial art project 2015 - 2017

“The Dwelling is effective at pulling young, regional artists out of obscurity
and giving them a spotlight...These hip openings have become one of our go-to sources
for the latest and greatest in the Charlotte art scene.

The Dwelling (2015 - 2017) was a roving curatorial project which transformed host houses and spaces across the city to exhibit works by emerging regional artists in one-night, pop-up parties. The inspiration for this project came to me soon after my move to Charlotte. Growing up, house shows and DIY art openings were my entry point in to the arts, but as a newcomer to Charlotte I felt like the arts' social scene was largely sequestered to private galleries, festivals and museums.
By matching a featured visual artist to a volunteer host house - we could create an introductory channel for artists outside the established gallery scene to meet with curators and potential collectors in a stimulating environment. As director of The Dwelling I curated the artists' work and promoted the event through mailed invitations, guerilla flyers, and artist videos. We gave Dwelling guests very little information outside of the artist's work - each invite included the address to a stranger's home and what time to show up. This strategic barrier to entry tapped into the type of openness and flexibility required to attend, host and organize the project.
